Winter birthdays in Michigan. I traded the horrible suffering of a summer pregnancy for the endless agony of never getting to have a birthday party outside. The real kicker? We have a pool. Unfortunately for my kids and their water loving friends, with birthdays in October, December, and February, no pool party birthdays are to be had. Fortunately, we have other options and make do.
The snow and cold may be difficult to contend with, but at least we have options.
For Isaac’s 1st birthday, we used the family farm, complete with an actual tractor. Everything was tractor and farming themed. It was cute and we had plenty of space. Also, because of his fall and harvest time birthday, we served donuts instead of cake. He had a cute field smash cake. Apple cider and Case IH décor really pulled this together.
We’ve had plenty of parties at home, keeping our guest lists small and mostly family. This year I’ve finally given in and will be hosting a school friends party. Skylar’s birthday is 2 weeks before Christmas. It is always very hectic. She asked for a sleepover with tacos for dinner. She is still too young to have an overnight party. We settled on a pajama party with a movie and popcorn and put it off until after Christmas during break. I’ll put together a taco bar and be grateful that I don’t have to travel and host.
If you don’t have the space or the desire to host at-home parties, what can you do, though?
We recently went to a party at a place full of inflatable bounce houses. Pizza, cake, arcade games and unlimited jumping was a huge hit with the kids. It seemed like it was well worth it for all the sanity it saved. It was also a great way for the kids to get some energy out without depending on the weather to cooperate.
Another energy burning birthday party we attended recently was at our local roller rink. I had kind of forgotten how much fun learning to skate can be. My four-year-old didn’t want to fall at first and was very apprehensive. As soon as he lost his balance and discovered it wasn’t so bad to fall, he had a blast. It was
In the future, as the kids get older, different ideas for parties come to mind. I fondly remember bowling and playing laser tag with my friends. Maybe, seeing a movie with a group of friends or trying their luck at the local escape rooms will become activities for teen parties. The possibilities really are endless. I know I am always excited to take my kids to try new things. It is also so fun to celebrate a birthday while seeing them make memories with friends.
