I’m a sucker for a good self-help book…
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
I can keep going. I’m pretty sure I keep Amazon in business on my self-help book purchases alone. There’s a constant activity that the majority of these books suggest… you guessed it, creating a Vision Board. Now, I have no problem reading a million self-help books, but I had something against creating a vision board for the longest time. Maybe it felt juvenile and in my head I imagined being sprawled out on the floor with a big poster board and markers, cutting pictures out of magazines. Then what do I do with it when it’s done? Hang it on my bedroom wall?
I decided to give it a try on Google Drawings using images I found on the web; that way it’s an electronic vision board. I felt like I was bringing Vision Boards into the 21st century. Then, I sat and stared at my blank electronic board for some time. I had vision board block!?
I’ll admit, what I came up with is a work in progress. I, of course, read about vision boards and what the heck you are supposed to put on them!? I focused on what I wanted to accomplish in my personal life and career. Others suggest focusing on what feelings you want to bring about. I’m not exactly a “feelings” person. What I am is a person who has goals they want to achieve; after I achieve I feel things.
Ok, starting with my career I have a few images associated with it. You’ll see “Finish Your Dissertation,” this one has been a struggle. I plan to hammer away at what I have left of my dissertation this year. My mom asks me about once a month, “When are you going to finish your dissertation”… now that a few pieces are in place that I was waiting on, I’m ready to go on and conquer that achievement. The other career goal you’ll see is “School Counselor.” I left the school system 3 years ago and have missed it ever since. After what felt like years of interviewing with public schools, I finally landed my dream job as a School Counselor at a district 15 minutes from my house {win, win}.
Now to the personal goals on my vision board {Mom, more family time, and stomping out debt}. I knew I wanted to be the best mom I could be to Jackson and with that comes more family time, too. Having my new job back in the schools helps with that goal as well. The “debt” goal is self-explanatory. I’m trying to cutback on pointless and silly spending {like NOT having packages delivered every dang day}.
My final goals pictured are to get back into running {I used to run before having Jackson}, to travel, take care of my skin, get my attic organized, and take up gardening {or just maintaining our backyard}.
Now, everyone’s vision board will be a reflection of goals they wish to accomplish or feelings they wish to bring about in their loved ones {or themselves}. While writing this and doing more research, I realized I have to print out my vision board and have it visible everyday. Why? Not just because every self-help book says so… because it’s easy to lose sight of your end goal when you’re not staring at it every day. Life gets busy, other things take your attention away and priorities are constantly shifting. {Now printed and on my cork board at work.}
What would you add to your vision board? Where would you display it to make sure you see it everyday?
