I’ve never done much to take care of my skin. Scratch that. I think it is safe to say that I actually used to actively work to damage it. I’m not proud, but I’m of the tanning salon generation. No simple skincare routine, here.
Because I don’t often wear makeup, and when I do, it’s just on my lips and eyes (and, TBH, I’m of the opinion that second-day mascara is just fine) I never got into the habit of removing my makeup and washing my face every night before bed.
I would wash my face in the shower with whatever soap was available, nothing special. It was usually just a bar of Irish Spring. And I would NEVER put anything on my skin after washing because I absolutely HATE the feeling of lotion of any kind.
I know, I’m a dirtball… but stay with me.
At some point in my adult life, I became aware that this was not normal. Most women actively take steps to clean and care for their skin, especially the skin on their faces. Who knew? Not me.
Over the past year, like just about everyone else under the sun, I was cooped up inside for hours on end. For me, somehow, this translated to looking in the mirror more often? Honestly, I’m not sure why. It also meant that I had a lot more time for personal grooming (oddly enough, with less reason to groom?) But, there was never a rush to get anywhere. You get the point. Time.
So what did I do with my time? Well, aside from watching every single available season of Love Island UK, and every single episode of ER, and every single British period drama ever produced (and well, many, many more shows, too) I finally started taking care of my skin!
That’s right. I started a skincare routine! And let me just say, WOW!
I never thought to take a before picture, so you’ll just have to trust me. But now, my skin is as soft as cashmere and my face absolutely glows!
I’m sure (kind of) that there must be someone else out there who is similar to the old me. Or just ladies who love a peek at someone else’s favorite skincare products.
Here is my current simple skincare routine for your reading pleasure:
I should note that I am 100% still a novice at skincare in general. So, all products I use have either come from my FabFitFun box, or from Annmarie Skin Care which I was influenced to buy from Kris Carr’s email list. However, these are products that I use daily, and I have chosen to exclude products that I’ve tried and not loved.
Step 1: Wash your face.
I still exclusively wash my face in the shower, but now I use Aloe Herb Cleanser from Annmarie Skin Care. I pump four times into the palm of my hand, lather together, then wash my face. That is all.
Step 2: Pat your face dry.
I do absolutely nothing special here. I just use the towel I put on when I get out of the shower. But I do make sure my skin is completely dry before moving on to the next step.
Step 3: Dry brush.
The dry brush I use came in the Winter 2020 FabFitFun box. I don’t know the exact brand, but this one looks just like it. But, I use it every time I wash my face (which is typically once a day), though I’ve heard this might be more often than is recommended. I don’t do anything else to exfoliate, it doesn’t irritate my skin, and I prefer the way my face feels after dry brushing…. So it’s working for me.
Step 4: Spritz with toning spray.
I literally have no idea what this does, but I like the way it feels after dry brushing. I use Neroli Toning Mist from Annmarie Skin Care and I spritz four times across my entire face and neck.
Step 5: Apply under eye cream.
Dark under-eye circles are my number one insecurity when it comes to my face. I used to try to cover them up, but I just don’t give AF anymore. Now, I’m using Verso Super Eye Serum with Retinol 8 from Verso Skincare. It came in the summer 2021 FabFitFun box.
Step 6: Apply anti-aging serum.
Another one where I’m really not sure what its purpose is, but it feels nice going on. I use one pump, dab it on my face, and rub it in. Actually, I have two different serums, Hydrating Anti-Aging Facial Serum from Annmarie Skin Care and Facial Serum with Vitamin C from Scentuals. I switch back and forth between the two depending on my mood.
Step 7: Apply oil.
If you have oily skin, you might not want to use this. I, however, love it. I love the way it smells and feels, and I love the way my skin looks after I apply it. Again, I use one pump, dab it on my face, and rub it in. I use Restorative Facial Oil from Annmarie Skin Care.
All in all, this entire routine takes me less than 3 minutes. So, having no time definitely is not a valid excuse to avoid taking care of your skin. I know, the old me is rolling her eyes hard.

I started this routine in the fall. Where I live, the sun is not an issue for about nine months of the year. So now, I’m on the hunt to add an SPF into my daily routine. Hit me with your product suggestions so I can try them out.
