Have you told yourself today that you can’t work out because of your children? I have told myself this same thing plenty of times. But honestly, I was tired of being down about my lack of fitness. So I changed it and decide to include my children in the best way I could. Now my children are 3 and 7 so they are able to walk and be mobile. I figured the best way to get more exercise as a busy mom, was to include my children in my workouts and also include myself in their play. So here are five easy-peasy tips to workout out with your children.
- Did you know kids are competitive? Have a race with your children. They will probably win because of their superhuman energy powers. But they will have fun and tire themselves out, while you get your work out in. It’s a win-win for everyone. Also, don’t worry about how long you can run, how fast you go, or even how you look. Just get started and do your best.
- Get Involved with your children’s play. Running after your child(ren) and playing a sport that you all enjoy is great for getting your heart rate up and showing your kids that you too, know how to move. My husband and I like to team up with our boys and play against each other.
- Go hiking. There are two reasons you go hiking, one for the scenic views and two for a good cardio workout. Hiking has an element of surprise when it comes to the hills, which makes for a fun workout for you and your children. Did I mention they probably will sleep better that night? What other reason do you need?
- Create a mini obstacle course. You don’t need to go out and buy anything. Use your chairs, kids toys, ropes, and tables to create a fun course for you and your family. Trust me, this will give you a good, intense workout.
- Bike riding is one of my favorite things to do. In our city, they have a downtown area to rent bikes for those who don’t have them. There is also a city trail to explore. I would recommend seeing if they have one of these attractions in your area, just to switch it up.
As you can see these tips for working out with your children are not your standard workouts where you have to figure out where to put your child. These are fun ways that you can live your life, spend family time together, and burn some calories. If you don’t have time to do some of the family style workouts, then find a mommy fitness group. They are more popular than you think. These groups help with keeping the kids occupied and having accountability. Remember to take your fitness journey one step at a time and do the best you can do. You’ve got this, mama.
