How-To: DIY Farmhouse Valentine’s Day Sign
We recently relocated from Arizona to Texas, and I’m on a mission to make a DIY Valentine’s Day sign for my front porch. I have plenty of old Valentine’s Day decor, but I haven’t ever taken the time to make something for my front porch. I want the sign to reflect what is going on inside of my home, which has a farmhouse decor theme. This means I need a farmhouse Valentine’s Day sign for the front porch.
Off to Lowe’s I went, in search of the supplies I’d need for this project.
- 6’ x 10” board, I used white wood.
- Stain, I got Classic Grey from Minwax
- Red and Black acrylic paint
- Stencil
This is a super easy project, because if it isn’t easy then it is going to end up in the 90% of the way done pile.
Do you have any of those projects hanging around your house?
The board I got from Lowe’s was already smooth and ready to go, but if yours isn’t I would sand it a little. When the surface is smooth the stencil goes on and comes off cleaner. My first step is to stain it. If you don’t want the stained wood look you can paint your board with whatever color you would like.
It took two coats of stain for the board to look this way. You can apply more coats if you are looking for a deep stain.
Once my stain was dry, it was time for the stencil. I put the stencil on and got to work painting away. For the buffalo plaid heart, you will need to do it in two steps. First the red heart, and then take the second heart stencil and place it on top and paint it black. When my paint was dry, I pulled away the stencil and there was my sign. I think the longest part of this DIY sign is waiting for the stain and paint to dry.
When my sign was all dry and ready to be put outside, I tied some jute ribbon at the top and placed her on my front porch. You could add a bow or any finishing touches you would like to make it your own!
I would love to see your recreation of the love sign on your front porch, so make sure you tag us on Instagram!!
