Fall is one of my favorite seasons. Not because the temperatures fall, but for decorating. Here in Phoenix we are still in the 100s, so it doesn’t feel very fall-like outside. Luckily, I can make it feel more fall-like inside. I love creating new things for each season and I have already started on some fall crafts. I can’t do too much, since we are going to be moving back to Texas soon, but I can add little things around the house to satisfy my fall decor craving. I made cute little fabric pumpkins to add to my decor. I went with neutral colors, since my house is on the market. But also because I really love my color scheme I will be doing in my new house.
My fabric pumpkins are grey buffalo check, because that is what my new home is going to be based around. I love the way these neutral pumpkins bring in a little fall decor without being super in-your-face fall. Don’t get me wrong, I love colorful decor during the seasons! But these just add some sophisticated fall touches. You can make your fabric pumpkins to fit your decor, just go over to Joann Fabrics and see what inspires you.
Here’s what I bought at Joann’s or had on hand at home:
- 1 yard of fabric (I actually bought 2 yards and a bit because I wanted to get two different patterns)
- Poly Fil
- Yarn to coordinate with your fabric
- Fabric scissors (you can use regular scissors, but if you do a lot of fabric cutting fabric ones make the job so much easier)
- Hot glue gun and some hot glue
- Wine corks
Let’s get to crafting!
I cut out squares in different sizes. I wouldn’t cut them any smaller than 12 x 12 because then it will be a little difficult to gather them up.
Then take a fabric square and lay it pattern or color side down and add some poly fil. Depending on how stuffed you want your pumpkins depends on how much, just fill it as much as you can. You can always take out some stuffing!
Now gather the fabric up to the top, make sure you get all the edges in your hand, otherwise your pumpkin will fall apart. This is why you don’t want to make them too small. Once you have all the fabric gathered, you will want to wrap some yarn around the top and tie it in a knot.
It’s time to shape the pumpkin. You will wrap a piece of yarn around the ball to make pumpkin like lines. You can do it twice, three times, or more to get your desired look. I did it twice on smaller pumpkins and three times on larger pumpkins. You will want to tie each line off at the top of the pumpkin.
Now just play with the lines you have made until it looks perfect to you. Then you will want to hot glue the wine cork on the top. I cut the wine corks in half for smaller pumpkins. You can also use sticks or twigs, but living in the desert those aren’t super easy to come by.
Then, just find some cute spots for your fabric pumpkins and enjoy your hard work! I placed them by my buffalo plaid pumpkin I made from a Target dollar spot pumpkin. You can find the tutorial for that over on my blog, A Mom and her Momtourage.
