Growing up, every summer I would make summer fun shirts with my cousin. My Grandmother always had a box full of foam stamps to make these shirts plus all the fabric paint that we would need. I always loved doing them and wore them proudly. When I had kids, I knew that we would have to do something similar. Instead of just during the summer, we do them at different fun holidays throughout the year.
This spring I thought it would be fun to do a bunny one, so I searched the internet for the cutest bunny I could find. And I couldn’t narrow it down to just one, but I got it down to three. Then, I let me daughter pick her favorite. Once we had our bunny figured out we could get to the fun bit!!
Here’s what you will need:
- T-shirt
- Fabric Paint
- Cotton Swabs
- Paper Plate
- Freezer Paper
- Scissors or a cutting machine
- An Iron
So, once you have your image picked out you will need to cut it out of freezer paper. Now, if you have a Silhouette or Cricut you can do it easily on there. But if you don’t, just trace the image onto the freezer paper and cut it out with a pair of scissors.
Once you have the image cut out, you will need to iron it on to your shirt. How you do that is you take the freezer paper lay it shiny-side-down and iron right over it. It will fuse with the shirt giving you the template of your image. Now you are almost ready for the fun part, make sure you put a piece of freezer paper inside the shirt, large enough to cover the entire inside of the shirt. You need to do this so that the paint does not seep through to the other side.
Painting is super fun and easy, my three year old did her’s this time. And yes, yes I did have a tiny bit of (okay major) craft anxiety while letting her do it. All you’ll need to do is put your fabric paint, in whatever color you or your kids picked out, on to a paper plate. Then you will take a cotton swab for each color and dip it into the paint and then stamp it on to the shirt. Usually, it makes a perfect little circle, as long as there isn’t too much paint on the end. Continue stamping all the way around the image, then it is up to you if you do another row a little further out. I have found that 3 rows usually look pretty good.
Once the paint has fully dried onto the shirt, gently peel away the freezer paper. What you are left with is a perfectly outlined shape. They generally turn out pretty cute, and even my three year old’s looks great!
I really love doing this craft for the holidays and with my kids, because it gives them a sense of pride in their shirt. Something that they made and will wear ever so proudly!!! I know growing up I did.
I would love to hear what shape you did with this craft!
