Let’s Take a Dip: Dip Recipes to get the Kids in the Kitchen

Posted on April 8, 2020April 8, 2020 by The Basic Moms

If your family is anything like mine, you may very well be looking at being home with your children, spouse, and pets for the next few weeks. And although it may be a time of uncertainties and “what-ifs”, it can also be a perfect time for family bonding and exploring new things. One thing that I am sure the readers at Ur Basic Mom have picked up on by now is that “Heather loves to cook”. And I also love to share that passion with my family when possible. So this week, after I get home from work, I will be getting my littles in the kitchen with me to try out some new recipes and also to whip up some family favorites.

One of the meals that I find super easy as it usually only has a handful of ingredients is dip. It could be an appetizer, a side dish or potentially even a dessert.  Several of these recipes are definitely something you can dive a chip right into, but if you are looking to be a bit healthier, then remember a carrot or celery stick can always be used as a vessel in which to deliver your dip. And as I mentioned above, yes, there may even be a dessert recipe for you if you scroll down to the bottom. Without further adieu, here are some of my favorite dip recipes and a new one that we absolutely love.

Buffalo Chicken Dip

If you are a fan of buffalo wings, then this dip is for you. And the recipe is ridiculously simple. Ali with Gimme Some Oven has a slow cooker buffalo chicken dip recipe that is as good as it is easy. And if you aren’t a fan of bleu cheese, much like myself, you can simply omit it. I promise the results are still wondrous.

Spinach and Artichoke Dip

One of my absolute favorite recipes during the past 6 years is the Slow Cooker Spinach and Artichoke Dip created by Chungah at one of my go-to recipe sites, Damn Delicious. Packed full of flavor in every single bite, your mouth will thank me later.

Hissy Fit Dip

What exactly is a “Hissy Fit”? Merriam-Webster defines a hissy fit as a tantrum. Well, let me tell you, the only reason you will be having a hissy fit with this dip is when it is all gone. It is so yummy and simple to make. Steph over at Plain Chicken shares a mouth-watering recipe that will be the star of any meal or get-together it appears at.

Lasagna Dip

I’m not going to lie, lasagna just so happens to be one of my favorite comfort foods. So when I’m wanting all the flavors, but not all of the fuss I make this super yummy Lasagna Dip from Closet Cooking. The original recipe calls for ground turkey and partially-skim mozzarella. However, as I like this to be as close to its comfort food family member, I use ground beef and full-fat cheese. The recipe still does take some time to put together, but I promise it will be worth your while.

Hot Crawfish Dip

Now, this is a recipe that might look familiar. I won’t drag you through how amazing this dip is since I just introduced it to you in February for Mardi Gras, but I couldn’t help but mention it again. It’s just that good. This is a dip that I wouldn’t suggest a chip for, however, a nice slice of french bread or even some celery is the perfect fair for this hearty dip. If you are wanting to give this one a try, I adore the recipe found at Flying on Jess Fuel.

Corn Dip

Every once in a while I get the craving for something a little bit different. But I also like to keep it “country” in a manner of speaking. When those days arise, I like to make the Cheesy Bacon Jalapeno Corn Dip penned by Morgan at Host the Toast that I found back in 2014. This dip is what we in the south like to refer to as “slap your momma” good.

Cannoli Dip

I don’t blame readers who read the intro and then chose to zoom all the way to the bottom of the page. This dip is definitely worth the anticipation for those who read the entire post or lack of patience if you skipped to the bottom. This recipe is a newer one to our house but will be on the favorites list for a long time to come. With a recipe that only takes about 10 minutes of your time, it’s a no-brainer for that sweet tooth. Chrisy at Homemade Hooplah will have your mouth watering and your tongue wanting to lick the bowl when you are done with this dip. And I definitely suggest using waffle cone pieces as Chrisy suggests.

These really are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to dip recipes that make regular appearances in my house. I find that 95% are pretty easy to make and that almost 100% of them are success stories for my family. So during this time of concern, worry and what some might call “forced family time”, I implore you LOOK FOR THE POSITIVES. Get to know your family all over again. Spend time doing things that you love with those that you love the most. As for me, I’ll be in the kitchen with my kids, encouraging their creativity and broadening their skill set to include more cooking.

“Cooking with kids is not just about ingredients, recipes, and cooking. It’s about harnessing imagination, empowerment, and creativity.”
