With springtime upon us, we start thinking about spring cleaning and all of the things we have to do. If you recall, I recently wrote about Vision Boards and how to manifest the things you want to accomplish. Well, attic organization was and still is on my Vision Board. Ahhh, the dreaded attic. If you’re like me, you look at something and think, ‘where can this go? Right! The attic!’ Fast forward a few months and you have a smorgasbord of crap in your attic and feelings of being overwhelmed with junk. This is exactly what happened to me a few months back when I went up into our attic to put away our holiday decorations. There was a little Christmas here, there and everywhere. I had forgotten to put out certain decorations because I didn’t have them all grouped together, let alone stored properly.
I had some time so I looked around and thought, where do I begin? The planner in me thought… I need a system. I started with grabbing some trash bags to get rid of the visible trash. Then the sorting began with grouping items by holiday first. We use our attic to store our holiday decor, along with off-season clothing, and old mementos. A good 30 minutes had passed and I had my holiday decorations sorted and ready to be placed accordingly.
Not all of us have the time to spend hours in our attic, organizing it to perfection. I thought I have to come back to this again (and again) to finish the job, and then to maintain it. Depending on your storage space, there are a few items that are necessary for keeping things organized:
- Storage containers (Costco has deals on these.)
- Shelving (Make use of smaller spaces by stacking items safely!)
- Trash Bags (to toss the junk)
I now have my holiday decor group seasonally and on the shelves on the one side of our attic. I have all of the gift bags and wrapping easily accessible from the stairs {think of all the gift bags one could receive between getting married, having a baby and from birthdays}. On the other side of our attic, we have a raised area where I have all of the storage containers of clothes. I have been pretty on top of sorting and packing away the baby clothes every few months. These storage containers are from Costco and come in a 3 pack for around $10. Every once in awhile I need to do some maintenance of picking up things that have been tossed to the side in a rush and adding more bins of baby clothes to the stacks. Otherwise, the feeling of walking up to our attic and having a clear walking path and an organized space is very liberating. I highly suggest grabbing a trash bag and starting the decluttering process in your storage space too!
What’s something that has worked for you to keep your storage space organized?
