Keep Calm, it’s Almost 4/20

Posted on April 16, 2019May 31, 2019 by The Basic Moms

Back in December, the state of Michigan legalized marijuana. And, with the upcoming stoner holiday 4/20 on April 20 (get it?), I will be channeling my high-school-self. I’m going to dust off my KoRn shirts and JNCO jeans, sit on my buddy’s back porch and smoke some weed out of a pop bottle while listening to Pink Floyd (and thinking I was way cooler than I actually was). Then dazedly watching the squirrels in his backyard for hours.

I’m kidding. I’m an adult now. I’m classy. I prefer to eat edibles.

Since cannabis is now legal in my state, you can’t yet purchase ready made edibles. So, if I’m going to partake, I have to make them myself. I’m going to walk you through the process of making my two favorite treats: pot cookies and pot gummies. Then, I’ll talk about how they work. Sounds fun, right?

First up, cannabis molasses cookies. These were fairly easy to bake. I think even a novice baker would be able to pull them off. I was able to easily make my own cannabis oil and used it in these cookies. Since I am a bit of a lightweight, and hadn’t partaken in the ganja goddess recently, I ate one small cookie and forgot about it. I got distracted by a phone call from a friend and cleaning up the toddler mess. I completely forgot that I consumed cannabis. About 20 minutes later this lovely warm feeling of euphoria washed over me and caught me off guard. I mentioned to my friend that I felt weird, at which point she promptly convinced me that I had carbon monoxide poisoning. I started to go into panic mode, then I saw the paper towel and crumbs on the counter. I. WAS. SO. HIGH. My house has never been cleaner. I have never slept better. 10/10 would recommend to a friend.

Now that I was somewhat acquainted with miss Mary Jane I decided to branch out into gummies. Making these felt a little bit like a science experiment. Once again, I had previously made the canna oil so that definitely streamlined this process. These tasty treats were very messy to make, and cooling them in a side by side fridge was challenging because I needed the real estate to lay them flat. I chose blue raspberry. They were delicious. They had a nice texture and the blue raspberry flavor masked the cannabis nicely. I ate two gummies and didn’t forget, this time. Instead I took the opportunity to meditate and it was awesome. Once again, I slept like a baby. This recipe would have been fun to make with friends while blaring 80’s metal. Aside from the mess, 10/10 would recommend to a friend.

Revisiting the silly ways of my youth was a fun little experiment. As adults, it’s easy to forget how to be carefree and just BE. This was a nice reminder that it’s OK to kick back after a long ass day of herding toddlers and eat a couple of gummies. Girl, you’ve earned it! Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. If you’re consuming responsibly, it’s no different than having a drink or two after dinner, and it’s much kinder on your liver than Xanax.

Shortly after I initially wrote this post I came down with a nasty stomach bug. I haven’t been this sick in years. I ended up in the ER and received a couple of  bags of fluids. Nothing they gave me stopped the vomiting. A friend suggested I try to take a gummy. Holy shit. Within 15 minutes I could feel the glorious relief washing over my body. I was able to drink water again. For the next four hours I felt like a normal human being again. Once it wore off I was immediately sick again. The difference was incredible.

I know that some of you out there aren’t fans of cannabis. That’s okay. You don’t like it? Don’t use it–I’m not saying my choices are everyone’s. I also realize that my experience may not be the same as everyone else’s. The thoughts expressed here are based solely on my own experience, and are not meant to influence anyone to head over to the dark side and smoke the devils lettuce. Remember, if you do partake please do so responsibly. Keep all goodies away from kids and pets. Don’t consume and drive, that’s just dumb. Behave as if you’re consuming alcohol.

Do you partake in the cannabis? What’s your favorite edible? Ever forgotten you’ve eaten one? I’d love to hear your stories in the comments.

Giiirl edibles mess me up. I didn’t know better and ate a HUGE cocoa Rice Krispie treat. I didn’t think it was working so I slowly ate the whole thing. I ate a whole pan of mac and cheese, 3 ice cream cones and who remembers what else that was all I found proof of the next day. My friend came over and found me laughing uncontrollably and talking to my dog with pauses where she might answer me and slept over worried about me 😑😂 I would try again but now I know to be patient
